Every organisation invests in people.
Many invest in leadership.
Some invest heavily in culture.
Yet very few recognise one of the resources that quietly influences all three.
I call it Human Agency.
Human Agency is our ability to make intentional, helpful choices and act upon them.
It shapes how people respond under pressure.
Whether they speak up.
Whether they take ownership.
Whether they learn from mistakes.
Whether they challenge poor decisions.
Whether they choose courage over comfort.
It influences innovation, collaboration, performance and change.
Yet most organisations never identify it as something they can intentionally develop.
Instead they focus on visible outcomes.
Culture.
Engagement.
Performance.
Communication.
These all matter.
But they are expressions of something deeper.
Over the past few months I’ve found myself asking a simple question.
What if organisations aren’t simply managing people?
What if they’re developing—or unintentionally reducing—Human Agency every day?
Once I began looking through that lens, many organisational challenges started making far more sense.
Perhaps the most valuable resource in business isn’t one we need to create.
Perhaps it’s one we’ve simply overlooked.
Human Agency.
