Human Agency as Competitive Advantage: The Resource Already Within Your Organisation

•

Organisations spend enormous amounts of time searching for competitive advantage.

New technology.

Better systems.

More efficient processes.

New products.

Better data.

Artificial intelligence.

All can matter.

But there is another resource already present within every organisation.

Its people.

Not simply their knowledge, qualifications or experience.

Their ability to think.

To question.

To notice.

To speak.

To learn.

To challenge an assumption.

To recognise when something isn’t working.

And ultimately, to make a helpful conscious choice about what they do next.

That is Human Agency.

We often measure what people produce while paying much less attention to the human capacity from which those results emerge.

Yet consider what happens when that capacity is strengthened.

A problem is identified earlier because somebody chooses to speak.

An assumption is challenged because somebody remains curious rather than certain.

A mistake becomes learning because somebody takes responsibility rather than concealing it.

An idea emerges because somebody feels able to question the way things have always been done.

A difficult conversation happens because somebody chooses not to avoid it.

None of these things necessarily requires additional technology, another process or a larger budget.

They require people exercising Human Agency.

Of course, organisations need structures, systems, technology and expertise.

But ultimately, people decide how all of them are used.

Perhaps that is why two organisations with apparently similar resources can produce very different outcomes.

The difference may not simply be what they have.

It may be what their people are able — and choose — to do with it.

For decades we have invested heavily in developing people’s knowledge and skills.

Perhaps the next organisational advantage lies in developing something even more fundamental:

their capacity to choose how those knowledge and skills are used.

That resource is already within the organisation.

The opportunity is to recognise it.

If this perspective has sparked your curiosity, I’ve explored these ideas in much greater depth in my paper, Human Agency.
