Control Creates Compliance. Agency Creates Commitment: Why Ownership Outperforms Oversight

Many organisations spend enormous amounts of energy trying to create consistency.

More process.

More controls.

More reporting.

More oversight.

And sometimes that’s necessary.

But there is a difference between compliance and commitment.

Compliance happens because people have to.

Commitment happens because people want to.

One produces activity.

The other produces ownership.

The challenge is that compliance is easier to measure.

You can count reports.

Track processes.

Monitor deadlines.

Commitment is harder.

It shows up in initiative.

In judgement.

In people taking responsibility without being asked.

In decisions being made because they are needed, not because they are required.

The strongest organisations I’ve encountered weren’t built on control.

They were built on people who felt able to contribute, influence and act.

Perhaps the question isn’t:

“How do we get people to do what we want?”

Perhaps it’s:

“How do we create an environment where people want to contribute their best?”

The difference may seem small.

In practice, it’s enormous.
