I was in the gym the other day and a thought hit me.
We often hear things like:
“Heart disease runs in the family.”
“My dad had it, my grandad had it… it’s just what happens.”
But is it?
Yes — genetics play a role. No question.
But they’re not a life sentence.
There’s something fascinating happening beneath the surface called epigenetics — the idea that how we live, what we think, how we respond to stress… can actually influence how our genes behave.
Not change them.
But switch them on or off.
Think about that for a moment.
Your habits matter.
Your environment matters.
And yes… even your beliefs matter.
I’ve seen families where three generations of men end up walking with sticks.
Is that purely genetic?
Or is it also learned behaviour… expectation… a quiet belief about “how things go for us”?
Because here’s the uncomfortable possibility:
If we believe something is inevitable, we often live in a way that makes it so.
Not consciously.
But consistently.
This isn’t about blame.
It’s about awareness.
You are not in total control of your biology —
but you are far from powerless.
Your thinking shapes your actions.
Your actions shape your health.
And over time… that shapes your life.
Maybe the real question isn’t:
“What did I inherit?”
But:
“What am I reinforcing?”
—
We may not write our DNA…
but we have a powerful say in how the story unfolds.
