A Moment to Reflect

Sometimes life has a way of stopping us in our tracks.
I recently found myself unexpectedly in hospital with chest pains — an experience that, while unsettling, has also given me time to pause and reflect.

The doctors tell me it’s probably angina caused by cholesterol. But to me, that’s not the true cause. It’s a symptom. A message from my body — one I’ve perhaps ignored for too long.

So I began asking myself a deeper question: Why have I treated my body the way I have?
Feeding it alcohol, rich foods, and other poisons isn’t exactly a loving act. It’s the opposite. And if I’m honest, it’s behaviour rooted in fear — not love.

In my book “How to Break Free from Fear – The Power of Choice”, I write about how our daily actions are the physical expression of the choices we make — choices often driven by unconscious fears and learned patterns.
So I had to ask: What fear have I been acting out?

Looking back, I can see that much of it began in my youth.
Peer pressure, advertising, social norms — all quietly encouraging me to behave in ways that helped me fit in rather than truly look after myself.
I wanted to belong. I wanted to be liked. But that wasn’t belonging — it was conditioning.

Real belonging comes from being at peace with who we are — from making conscious choices that align with love, respect, and self-awareness.
And that starts with taking full responsibility for how we treat ourselves — physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

Lying here, I’ve realised that responsibility isn’t a burden.
It’s freedom.
It’s the point where we stop blaming life, circumstance, or the past — and instead choose to respond differently.

This experience has reminded me that self-care isn’t selfish. It’s an act of respect — for the body that carries us, the heart that guides us, and the life that’s still unfolding before us.

I’m deeply grateful to the wonderful NHS teams who looked after me — and equally grateful for the wake-up call.
Because sometimes the most important lessons arrive when life slows us down just enough to hear what our heart has been trying to say all along.
